Inferring Lessons

Fly Away Home by Eve Bunting opens the eyes to a difficult subject of being homeless and having to live in an airport terminal all while trying not to be noticed.  When the boy notices a bird that got trapped by mistake it gives him hope when the bird does escape the airport.  I loved this book as it didn't have a traditional ending but did have optimism.  I made an anchor chart with "what the text said" on the left and "what we can infer" on the right.  I began with a few things in mind like the clothes are blue - we can infer they do not want to be noticed.  And the mom was sick - she must have died because she is not with him.  This lead to conversations about how the dad probably had to quit his job to take care of the mother and used all of his money and is now homeless.
